Research Services - Laboratory Animal Research Core

Job Description

This is routine technical work involving the handling, care, feeding, and observation of animals used in controlled research projects. Work of this class is distinguished from that of Animal Caretaker by the degree of responsibility imposed, by the amount of initiative and personal judgment permitted in the administration of animal diets, or by supervisory responsibilities performed. Work is subject to spot-checking for conformance with instructions and sanitary procedures, but most assignments are performed without review of work methods. Functional contacts include co-workers, students, and researchers.

Has primary responsibility for the care of one or more large colonies which include a variety of species such as rats and mice for the purpose of research in Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Psychology, Animal Husbandry, and other related scientific.

Assists researcher in the breeding of animals; observes and record occurrence of estrus in female animals and controls and records all mating. Assist researchers in performance of other duties; assures correct records are maintained in association with animal care, feeding and treatment, and may administer medical treatment under close supervision.

Observes animals for behavior and reports any sign of abnormality (e.g. failure to eat, diarrhea, injury, etc.). May handle and tame young animals received by shipment to accustom them to contact with humans prior to conducting experiments with them.

Prepares animals for experimental procedures and assists academic or professional staff in experimental work as instructed; assists experimenters in restraining animals, has animals selected for experimentation in proper location at correct time.

Disposes of dead animals and may euthanize animals in accordance with standardized procedures.

Keeps stock of feed and supplies and delivers equipment, materials, animals, and supplies to departmental facilities as needed. May draw blood samples and obtain fecal, urine, or other specimens from animals.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduate or equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge skills and abilities can be acquired is necessary.

(Certification as Junior Technician by A.A.L.A.S. is desirable.)

One year experience in animal care activities, or sufficient experience as animal technician trainee.

Ability to handle and work with animals; ability to recognize abnormalities in animals' behavior.

Ability to administer routine diets and medications without supervision.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Up to $17.00 per hour; Commensurate with experience, education, and internal equity
